Last week we looked at a book of art composed by Alan lee, one of the illustrators for Lord of the Rings. The book showed preliminary sketches and different stages of his work; most of these were concept designs for characters, landscapes and architecture. Other than that we scanned other books about modern art and pop art, including one about box art. Box art was interesting, basically a style revolving around assemblage of found objects; specifically Candy Jerdigans art, revolving around objects she found on the streets of New York.
Our assignment for this week was to write a paragraph about how other artist work, particularly the one's we looked over, influence us. We can also make a sketch or drawing to represent this.

Be prepared and getting started as my skills for improvement. I chose be prepared because its obnoxious to come to class and have to spend ten minutes asking for a pencil; and getting started because otherwise I will probably end up staring at the screen for several hours, or engage in other exhilarating activities such as pencil rolling or eraser flipping.
Five ways to take better notes:
-review notes from previous class before starting
-bring several pens and notebook paper to class
-only write down main ideas
-use abbreviations
-re-write or review notes after class
Five ways to control procrastination
-self motivate
-work on task as part of a group
-get help from teachers or other students
-eliminate distractions
-set reasonable standards

I'm in the art service learning class. Last week we looked at lettering fonts used in advertising and how the influence the readers. Various fonts are used to create different associations, depending on what is being marketed. This is vaguely interesting, we're suppose to create our own font using our initials. I drew the letter C in the form of a tree, I have doubts as to whether this expresses me as a person in any way shape or form. There really isn't that much to say about the class at this point. The teacher is a college professor, she paints abstract nature related landscapes with acrylics and hates oil paint. I like oil paint and dislike acrylics. Aside from this she seems to be an interesting teacher.

I could improve in the area of setting goals and expectations. I generally don't set clear goals, which can lead to procrastination and misdirection, as it can be easy to become distracted if you weren't really sure what you were doing in the first place.World domination seems like a reasonable goal for this week. As world leader it will be my first and foremost occupation will be the improvement of daytime television and establishing elvish as an international second language. I would also like to win the nobel peace prize, establish world peace, and get up on time in the morning.
In addition to what is listed here I think it's important to understand the value of learning for its own sake. Learning is often encouraged entirely on the basis that it will cause you to make more money, in my opinion this is one of the least important reasons for learning.
